Our Story

Exclusively devoted to growing ultra-premium Canadian VQA wines made from Burgundy’s classic grape varieties, the wines of Le Clos Jordanne debuted in Canada and the international marketplace in 2007 and introduced the wine industry to an entirely new level of quality and expectation from Canada.

2000

A Partnership Is Born

Le Clos Jordanne’s unique Franco-Canadian partnership between Boisset, La Famille des Grands Vins, of Nuits-St-Georges, France, and Ontario-based Vincor Canada was announced in February 2000.

These two major wine producers from opposite sides of the Atlantic signed a joint venture agreement to develop a major “domaine”, or vineyard, in Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula. They shared the same vision and goal: to produce spectacular, world class wines in the Niagara Peninsula.

Old World Meets New World

Under the joint management of Boisset and Vincor, viticulturists were brought from France to join their counterparts in the Niagara Region to combine the expertise of both the Old and New Worlds and find the perfect land to purchase the first vineyards for the project. Since the beginning of this exceptional relationship, Le Clos Jordanne has grown from a fledging group of vineyards to an exclusive and prestigious winery.

2009

Globally Recognized, Critical Acclaim

In May 2009, LCJ 2005 Claystone Terrace Chardonnay captured the top spot for Chardonnay in the “Judgement of Montreal” experts’ tasting, bringing global attention to the Niagara Peninsula and to the super and ultra-premium wines it can produce.

The wines – produced under the direction of winemaker Thomas Bachelder – crafted with sustainable winemaking practices, and focus on delivering the best and most authentic expression of Burgundian style wines, through the lens of Niagara terroir.

In the cellar, innovative New World practices are combined with time-honoured Burgundian techniques, such as harvesting and sorting the grapes by hand, and using 100% French oak barrels. Every step of the process receives careful consideration.

2016

Project Paused

Plans were in place to build Le Clos Jordanne into the flagship winery of the Niagara region, which included a Frank Gehry-designed building.

Unfortunately, after much planning, it was decided that the proposed site of the building would be better used to plant more vines. Le Clos Jordanne continued to produce critically acclaimed wines until a few consecutive years of short crops & difficult Ontario harvests led to a pause on the project in 2016.

Thomas Returns

In June 2019, Arterra Wines Canada announced a new partnership with Thomas Bachelder to rebirth the beautiful wines of the Le Clos Jordanne and bring the prominence of this great vineyard back into the Canadian and international spotlight.

2024

A New Chapter, A New Home

In 2024, Le Clos Jordanne opened the doors to its new permanent home, its estate winery – Domaine Le Clos Jordanne - nestled in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula on the Beamsville Bench.

This new chapter provides opportunity to expand its winemaking philosophy and vision to include both terroirs of Jordan and Beamsville in Niagara, crafting ultra premium Burgundian style wines that showcase the best expression of highly coveted, limestone laced, Niagara terroir with finesse, complexity and elegance.
